What is a heavy-duty linear actuator?

A heavy-duty linear actuator is a machine component that converts rotational motion into linear motion and is capable of moving objects between 2 and 50 tons. When purchasing a heavy-duty electric cylinder actuator, selecting a product that best matches your application and specific requirements is important. Whether you want a high load capacity, a longer duty cycle, or have equipment requiring very little maintenance, you’ll need to do your research.

Columbus McKinnon’s actuators are designed to handle a wide range of application loads and speeds and can be used for continuous operations. They can also be used for applications subject to extremely harsh environmental conditions. Our Duff-Norton® brand manufactures the broadest range of high-capacity, heavy-duty linear actuators ranging from 2 to 50 tons. All electric cylinder actuators are available in clevis or trunnion mounting in offset, right angle or parallel in-line configurations with speeds up to 6.3 in/s (160 mm/s).

This type of actuator can lift ultra-high-capacity loads. Plus, they eliminate hydraulic fluids, the need for high PSI (which can be expensive), the potential for leaks, and additional maintenance, making it an ideal choice.

Electric Cylinder Actuator Features and Benefits for Standard and Hazardous Conditions

Our Duff-Norton brand now offers new models of the popular SCN and SCW Series Heavy-Duty Linear Actuators with motors and limit switches rated for hazardous locations.

The SCN Series combines a ball screw-driven translating tube system with trunnion-mounted, high-efficiency helical or helical-bevel, oil-filled gearboxes.

Both Duff-Norton electric cylinder actuator series use a precision-guided translating tube system to broaden application capabilities. A ground and chrome-plated translating tube sliding in polymeric bearings produces excellent resistance to buckling. This helps the heavy-duty linear actuators achieve greater stroke lengths than are possible with conventional double clevis-mounted mechanical actuators.

The enclosure of the screw by the tube system shields it from environmental contaminants and retains lubricants, requiring less maintenance and allowing ensuring longer service. Our heavy-duty linear actuators use hydraulic cylinder-grade wiper seals to effectively eliminate dirt from the screw area.

The modular design for both series allows for unlimited configuration possibilities to tailor the electric cylinder actuator to your specific application. The available gear ratio options are unmatched by any similar product and allow precise customization of your actuator speed and load specifications. Additional motor and ratio options are available to meet specific capacity, speed, or life requirements.

Heavy-Duty Linear Actuator Case Studies

The Railroad Industry

Challenge: A railroad company used hydraulic-powered moveable bridges to lift rails and move locking pins. However, the hydraulic fluid would leak into the waterway below, and the company received a fine for the spillage every time this happened.

Solution: The company replaced its hydraulics with Duff-Norton’s electric cylinder actuators to solve this issue. Doing so eliminated the risk of spills, environmental contamination, and associated fines.

The Paper Industry

Challenge: A paper company used a hydraulic-powered upender to rotate large, heavy paper rolls. The hydraulics were prone to leakages, which would end up damaging entire rolls of the finished paper. Each leak would cost the company thousands of dollars in scrap material.

Solution: The paper company replaced their hydraulic upenders with Duff-Norton electric cylinder actuators capable of moving 25-ton loads across a distance of 66 inches. In the four years since making this change, Duff-Norton’s SuperCylinders have delivered reliable performance with zero scrap, saving the paper company money.
