SMC 4 Multi-Controller
by Columbus McKinnnon | 26 Nov 2025
The SMC 4 Multi-Controller is an electronic control and monitoring device designed to enhance safety for hoists with pole-changing or frequency-controlled drives.
By continuously monitoring the hoist, the SMC 4 contributes to safe operation and a wide range of functional applications for the hoist. To keep pace with technological advancements and the evolving applications of our SMC 4 condition monitoring device in pole-changing and frequency-controlled systems, we have developed training modules tailored to different levels of experience. Module I: Basic Training Module II: Advanced Training Module III: Expert Training (additional modules to follow)
Contents
SMC4 Module I: Basic Training
Training Objectives:
In this training module, we provide participants with information and basic knowledge about the capabilities of the SMC4. They will also learn how to use the software and what new features have been implemented to ensure that annual maintenance proceeds smoothly.
In addition, participants will be able to activate standard relays for optional functions, such as load indication, and use the status display (inputs and outputs) for troubleshooting.
Contents:
- Product overview and comparison with existing devices
- New terminal connections for both safety-related and non-safety-related
- requirements
- Performance levels and functional logic for higher safety requirements
- Relay overview, including communication methods and option modules
- Safety-related functions and monitoring
- Optional functions and features such as ALC+, brake monitoring, partial load,
- and load indication
- Conducting safety-related tests such as the speed test
- Access to the new software and connectivity hardware
- Navigating the software
- Explanation of individual functions and features
SMC4 Module II: Advanced Training
Training Objectives:
This training module provides participants with a comprehensive overview of the complete SMC4 application with integrated Magnetek Series 4 frequency inverters on STAHL CraneSystems hoists.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to calibrate load settings for lifting operations, perform troubleshooting and fault correction, and adjust settings for rotation control and speed monitoring.
The Magnetek Series 4 drive is covered in detail, including standard parameters and settings for hoisting and travel applications. Participants will learn to navigate the entire parameter tree using both the display and the Impulse Link 5 software.
Content:
SMC4
- Application parameters for relay signals
- Functional logic and communication in the drive application
- Parameters for drive monitoring and threshold values
Parameters for speed monitoring and rotation control - Special functions such as ALC+ (Automatic Load Control) and AUL
- (Advanced Ultra Lift)
- Troubleshooting and fault resolution
- Load calibration via password-protected access
- Hands-on exercises
Frequency Converters
- Product Overview of Magnetek Series 4 Frequency Converters
- Navigating the Parameters (Display & Software)
- Detailed explanation of the start and stop processes, including brake test errors
- Safety functions such as SafeTorqueOff
- Application-specific parameters of the Series 4
- Troubleshooting, including fault monitoring and error history
- Overview of the Impulse Link 5 software
- Application with a cable drum brake
- Hands-on exercises
Participants
